Habitat for Humanity Upper Thumb Chapter was established in 1994 by former area pastor Doug Leffler and a group of local individuals interested in eliminating poverty housing in the Upper Thumb.
The first Habitat Upper Thumb Chapter house was built in 1996 in Owendale. In 2008, the Upper Thumb Chapter completed its 9th house in Elkton. New home sites continue to 
be developed in communities throughout the Thumb. It is the intent of Habitat for Humanity Upper Thumb Chapter to spread the building of Habitat homes throughout the Upper Thumb so that different communities have the opportunity to experience hosting a Habitat home building project. Site selection is based on availability of a lot through donation of the lot or a portion of the cost of the lot and the feasibility of constructing on that lot (septic system roads, wells, etc.)
Habitat for Humanity Upper Thumb is a non-profit housing corporation that is governed by a Board which meets monthly. In addition, a number of committees are currently active, including: Site Selection, Construction, Family Selection, and Family Support.
